{"id":5830,"date":"2021-04-06T18:04:52","date_gmt":"2021-04-06T18:04:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.futuresandoptions.gr\/en\/?p=5830"},"modified":"2021-04-06T18:04:54","modified_gmt":"2021-04-06T18:04:54","slug":"unicef-launches-cryptocurrency-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.futuresandoptions.gr\/en\/unicef-launches-cryptocurrency-fund\/","title":{"rendered":"UNICEF launches Cryptocurrency Fund"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>UN Children\u2019s agency becomes first UN Organization to hold and make transactions in cryptocurrency<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNICEF will now be able to receive, hold and disburse donations of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futuresandoptions.gr\/en\/category\/cryptocurrencies\/\">cryptocurrencies<\/a> ether and bitcoin, through its newly-established UNICEF Cryptocurrency Fund.\u00a0In a first for United Nations organizations, UNICEF will use cryptocurrencies to fund open source technology benefiting children and young people around the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the structure of the UNICEF Cryptocurrency Fund, contributions will be held in their cryptocurrency of contribution, and granted out in the same cryptocurrency.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a new and exciting venture for UNICEF,\u201d said Henrietta Fore, UNICEF Executive Director. \u201cIf digital economies and currencies have the potential to shape the lives of coming generations, it is important that we explore the opportunities they offer. That\u2019s why the creation of our Cryptocurrency Fund is a significant and welcome step forward in humanitarian and development work.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first contributions to the UNICEF Cryptocurrency Fund will be received from the Ethereum Foundation and will benefit three grantees of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/innovation\/stories\/Fundblockchain6months\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNICEF Innovation Fund<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 and a project coordinated by the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.giga.partners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GIGA initiative<\/a>&nbsp;to connect schools across the world to the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Ethereum Foundation is excited to demonstrate the power of what Ethereum and blockchain technology can do for communities around the world. Together with UNICEF, we&#8217;re taking action with the Cryptofund to improve access to basic needs, rights, and resources,\u201d said Aya Miyaguchi, Executive Director of the Ethereum Foundation. \u201cWe aim to support the research and development of the Ethereum platform, and to grow the community of those that benefit from a technology that will better countless lives and industries in the years to come. We&#8217;d like to thank UNICEF and the UNICEF family of national committees for their leadership as we create real progress together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ethereum Foundation will make its initial donation through the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">French National Committee<\/a>&nbsp;for UNICEF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNICEF national committees of\u00a0USA,\u00a0Australia\u00a0and\u00a0New Zealand\u00a0also accept cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The launch of the UNICEF Cryptocurrency Fund is part of UNICEF\u2019s ongoing work with blockchain technology. UNICEF co-leads the UN Innovation Network with WFP.
